How do you relieve stress?

One of my favorite ways to blow off some steam and creatively express myself is to get crafty in the kitchen! I LOVE baking, but having cookies constantly around can be dangerous-which brings me to this easy and functional recipe for energy bites.

One of my favorite add-ins for these bites is adaptogens. Adaptogens are herbs that help us to naturally combat stress in our bodies - they literally adapt in order to fulfill your body’s particular needs. Maca (one of my favorites), for example, can have either an energizing or a calming effect determined by how the adrenals are functioning. How cool is that!? After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, I looked for natural ways to bring my body back to homeostasis. I found herbs and adaptogens to be one of my most useful allies in transforming my health and have never looked back.

All that said, adaptogens can be difficult to incorporate into everyday meals and honestly taste a bit grainy when added to coffees and teas. And if you love snacking as much as I do, these energy bites are a perfect way to pack a nutritional punch while also nourishing your body. I’ve experimented with several recipes and come up with some myself, but also love referencing cookbooks such as Kosmic Kitchen, which is where I got this recipe for

Adaptogenic Power Bites
Recipe: 

One 16-ounce jar nut butter of choice (I used organic almond)

3/4 cup raw local honey

1/2 cup adaptogenic powders (listed below) 

1 1/2 tablespoons carob powder or unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder

A few pinches cayenne powder

1/2 cup coconut flakes  

Adaptogens I Used: (2 tbsp each)

Ashwaganda 

Maca

Mangosteen Hibiscus

Mucuna 

Makes about 25 one inch bites.

I couldn’t leave you hanging without sharing a recipe of my own, so here goes!

This recipe may need a bit of tweaking here or there. If it is a bit dry, add more oil, if it needs texture, add a few more nuts or seeds of your choice. I hope you enjoy! 


Lemon Energy Bites
Recipe:

1 1/4 cup almond flour

2 tablespoons maple syrup

2 teaspoons coconut oil 

1 teaspoon arrowroot starch

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 

Zest of 1 lemon plus 1-2 tablespoons lemon juice 

1-2 tablespoons adaptogens of choice 

Handful walnuts

Dash of salt 

Makes about 10 bites.
